2016-2017 San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition -  Summary of Results

We congratulate Scripps Ranch High School on their First Place finish in the 11th Annual San Diego High School Mock Trial Competition that concluded on February 25, 2017.  
 
We also congratulate Academy of Our Lady of Peace on their outstanding Second Place finish in the competition.   OLP was invited by the Constitutional Rights Foundation to the state tournament as the Wild Card Team.   Both Scripps Ranch High School and Academy of Our Lady of Peace went on to represent San Diego County in Riverside on March 24-26, 2017.
 
2016-2017 Summary of Results
  • 60 trials between 2/16, 2/21, 2/23, and 2/25/2016
  • 574 students from 28 high schools participated in the San Diego County Competition (29 teams had registered)
    • Up from 4 initial schools in 2007
    • Up from 25 schools in 2015
  • 4 rounds of competition.  Each team competed twice - both prosecution and defense
  • 58 state and federal trial judges, magistrates, and commissioners presiding over 60 trials (some presided twice)
  • 81 attorney coaches volunteered
  • 214 attorney scorers volunteered to score the 4 rounds of the Competition and the Championship round                
  • 65 courtroom monitors volunteered including JusticeCorps students, law students, and paralegals from the San Diego Paralegal Association
  • Scripps Ranch High School will go on to compete in the Finals of the California State High School Mock Trial Competition in Riverside on March 24-26, 2017

  • 469 students from 27 high schools participated in the San Diego County Competition (29 teams had registered)
    • Up from 4 initial schools in 2007
    • Up from 25 schools in 2015
  • 4 rounds of competition.  Each team competed twice - both prosecution and defense
  • 58 state and federal trial judges, magistrates, and commissioners presiding over 61 trials (some presided twice)
  • 60 attorney coaches volunteered
  • 182 attorney scorers volunteered to score the 4 rounds of the Competition and the Championship round                
  • 78 courtroom monitors volunteered including JusticeCorps students, law students, and paralegals from the San Diego Paralegal Association

  • 440 students from 25 high schools participated in the San Diego County Competition (28 teams had registered)
    • Up from 4 initial schools in 2007
    • Up from 19 schools in 2013
  • 4 rounds of competition.  Each team competed twice - both prosecution and defense
  • 49 state and federal trial judges, magistrates, and commissioners presiding over 53 trials (some presided twice)
  • 67 attorney coaches volunteered
  • 177 attorney scorers volunteered to score the 4 rounds of the Competition and the Championship round                
  • 57 courtroom monitors volunteered including JusticeCorps students, law students, and paralegals from the San Diego Paralegal Association
  • The Bishops School went on to compete and win 3rd Place in the Finals of the California State High School Mock Trial Competition in Riverside on March 20-22, 2015

San Diego County High Schools

Many San Diego County public and private high schools have participated in past Mock Trial Competitions. Click on the school name or year to see team photos. 

The Program and Competition welcomes returning and new high schools annually, and includes high schools from all regions within San Diego County.  Students from all academic levels find participation rewarding, as all student learn from new challenges found in mock trial.  Some high schools limit participation to seniors, while others include freshmen through seniors.  Some teams include returning veterans of the mock trial competition, while others may be comprised entirely of newcomers.  Each school is free to compose its team in any non-discriminatory manner consistent with the rules of the Constitutional Rights Foundation and the Competition.
