2017-2018 San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition -  Summary of Results

 
Scripps Ranch High School finished in First Place in the 12th Annual San Diego High School Mock Trial Competition that concluded on February 24, 2018.  
 
 
Westview High School finished in Second Place in the competition.

  • 61 trials between 2/15, 2/20, 2/22, and 2/24/2018
  • 600 students from 29 high schools participated in the San Diego County Competition (30 teams had registered)
  • 4 rounds of competition.  Each team competed twice - both prosecution and defense
  • 56 state and federal trial judges, magistrates, and commissioners presiding over 61 trials (some presided twice)
  • 62 attorney coaches volunteered
  • 190 attorney scorers volunteered to score the 4 rounds of the Competition and the Championship round                
  • 65 courtroom monitors volunteered including JusticeCorps students, law students, and paralegals from the San Diego Paralegal Association
  • Scripps Ranch High School went on to compete in the Finals of the California State High School Mock Trial Competition in Orange County  on March 16-18, 2018                 
  • 2017-2018 San Diego County High School Mock Trial Committee: 13 members including representatives from the San Diego County Bar Association, Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego, United States District Court for the Southern District of California, Office of the District Attorney, Office of the Public Defender, United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, Federal Defenders, Inc., San Diego Paralegal Association, and with help from San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Justice Foundation

Academy of Our Lady of Peace finished in Second Place in the competition.
 
OLP was invited by the Constitutional Rights Foundation to the state tournament as the Wild Card Team.   Both Scripps Ranch High School and Academy of Our Lady of Peace went on to represent San Diego County in Riverside on March 24-26, 2017.

  • 60 trials between 2/16, 2/21, 2/23, and 2/25/2016
  • 574 students from 28 high schools participated in the San Diego County Competition (29 teams had registered)
    • Up from 4 initial schools in 2007
    • Up from 25 schools in 2015
  • 4 rounds of competition.  Each team competed twice - both prosecution and defense
  • 58 state and federal trial judges, magistrates, and commissioners presiding over 60 trials (some presided twice)
  • 81 attorney coaches volunteered
  • 214 attorney scorers volunteered to score the 4 rounds of the Competition and the Championship round                
  • 65 courtroom monitors volunteered including JusticeCorps students, law students, and paralegals from the San Diego Paralegal Association

San Diego County High Schools

Since 2007, many San Diego County public and private high schools have participated in past Mock Trial Competitions. Click on the school name or year to see team photos. 

The Program and Competition welcomes returning and new high schools annually, and includes high schools from all regions within San Diego County.  Students from all academic levels find participation rewarding, as all student learn from new challenges found in mock trial.  Some high schools limit participation to seniors, while others include freshmen through seniors.  Some teams include returning veterans of the mock trial competition, while others may be comprised entirely of newcomers.  Each school is free to compose its team in any non-discriminatory manner consistent with the rules of the Constitutional Rights Foundation and the Competition.
